Miranda May Kerr was born on April 20th, 1983 in Sydney, Australia, the daughter of Therese and John Kerr. She and her younger brother Matthew were raised in the small town of Gunnedah, New South Wales, where the family lived a low-key, rustic life.
Miranda got her start in modeling at age 13, when she entered and won the 1997 annual Dolly magazine/Impulse model competition, and was flown to Sydney to shoot for the magazine. A subsequent series of beachwear ads for Billabong boosted her media exposure. Miranda moved to New York City and signed with NEXT Model Management in 2004, where she was booked for a slew of prominent runway and print campaigns. A 2006 appearance as a model on Project Runway, as well as a successful U.S. campaign for Maybelline, led to a Victoria’s Secret contract the following year, the first to be offered to an Australian by the megabrand. As a Victoria’s Secret Angel, Miranda walked the runway in the company’s popular annual fashion show, and became the face of PINK, a line aimed at college-age girls.
Miranda doesn’t shy away from explicit shoots, especially if it’s for a cause she’s passionate about. She was pictured nude and chained to a tree on the cover of Rolling Stone Australia to raise awareness about endangered koalas in her home country, and has appeared au naturel in Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue (the latter while pregnant).
Miranda successfully crossed over into high fashion when Nicolas Ghesquière hand-selected her to walk in his Spring 2010 show for Balenciaga. That same year, she married her boyfriend of three years, Orlando Bloom. The relationship produced a son, Flynn, but the pair have since separated.
Miranda’s life outside modeling is all about wellness. She has studied nutrition and health psychology, is devoted to yoga, and wrote a book for tweens and teens titled Treasure Yourself, encouraging self-esteem. In 2009 she launched KORA Organics, a line of eco-friendly skincare.
